It remains to be seen whether Mayor Matt Brown and Maureen Cassidy broke any rules within London City Council’s code of conduct, but it certainly raises some questions.

One way to avoid any issues is to have a policy that would require disclosure of any romantic relationships, according to a labour lawyer from Toronto.

Howard Levitt is with Levitt LLP in Toronto and spoke with AM980.

“If you don’t have disclosure, you have a situation where someone could be impacting the remuneration of someone else, and undisclosed to the company have an actual interest in the remuneration being higher or they could be giving them job assignments and they may not be entirely objective in job assignments, so disclosure is everything, especially with respect to superior subordinates,” said Levitt.

Currently in London, there is no stipulation that says two councillors cannot have a relationship.
